Solid Steel (7th December) We finish our week of celebrations for 30 Years of Solid Steel where it all started, with a mix by Detroit Techno legend Juan Atkins and Ninja Tune founders Coldcut. Juan Atkins was the guest on the first Solid Steel show in December 1988 and you can also hear that mix and interview by Coldcut at http://solidsteel.net/broadcasts/916 Recalling his experience appearing on pirate radio station Kiss FM, Juan told us: “I remember doing the show with Coldcut in 1988 from someone’s apartment, like on the 9th floor or so in what seemed to be a huge apartment building. I was amazed by all of the pirate radio stations in London that were introducing the UK to all the new music, music styles, and genres. We had nothing like that in the USA. Pirate radio stations in the UK were responsible for this music making it into the charts as well” “Interviewing Juan Atkins was a buzz” recalls Matt Black from Coldcut. “Not only for the fact I had never interviewed anyone before, let alone a don of his calibre. I was a fan of his work as one of the Belville 3 (Atkins, May, Saunderson), but also earlier as Cybertron, whose Kraftwerk-meets-hiphop-electro excursions had reached and rocked us in the UK early 80s with his space-out sound. I relished the opportunity to get a direct line on the origins of electro and techno from key originator Mr Atkins, and also found out some of his thoughts on the birthplace of much music - Detroit. He expressed wonder at being on pirate station Kiss and how the UK's pirate radio supported new music and DJ culture. Juan is a beautiful guy and I well remember his soulful natural charisma and down to earthness. His DNA runs prolifically through modern music.” Juan Atkins recently announced that he will perform the first-ever Cybotron live show on a new tour, launching in April at the Barbican in London. Solid Steel (6th December) We continue our run of 30th anniversary shows with Gerd Janson, who is one of the most highly respected DJs in the world of house and techno and also the brain behind the Running Back label, an imprint that has been a home to numerous artists over the years. It’s testament to Janson’s curatorial instinct that music both popular – Tensnake, Todd Terje – and cult – Maurice Fulton, Theo Parrish – feel right at home. In addition to his work helming Running Back, Janson has also teamed up with Philip Lauer under the Tuff City Kids alias. He told us; "Against all obstacles (technical, time, taste), you are listening to 60 minutes of old (Don Laka (Hello Hunee)). older (James Booth), brand-new (Sascha Funke / Niklas Wandt) and unreleased music (Genius of Time). The Ninja Tune wheels of steels megamix, I always planned on doing, is still far from becoming reaity, but at least, Peggy Gou made the cut via the I:Cube treatment. I hope you enjoy the show." Solid Steel (5th December) In Hour 1 it's Mark Pritchard and The Milky Man who have been pals for 15+ yrs, having met through a pair of beautiful mutual friends. A lot of music has been shared between these two over that time. Mark Pritchard lives and records in Sydney making records for Warp Records. He produced this mix after a few long skype calls with Milky, where they got the track listing tight and worked out where to edit and whatnot. A mix full of old, new and one day to be released favourites, put together with the Solid Steel dons in mind. Additional vocal drops by Lolina and ASH. Music featured in the mix includes tracks from Raymond Scott, Bibio, Boran Tribe, Circadian Rhythms, Robert Wyatt, Horace Tapscott and an unreleased track by Mark Pritchard. In Hour 2 It's DJ Food with his Solid Steel 30 'A Dream Within A Dream Within A Dream' mix featuring Humanoid. Part of Solid Steel since the early 90's and still producing incredible mixes, this time including a special exclusive mix within. He had this to say; 'What to do to celebrate 30 years of Solid Steel? The original eclectic mix show with the broadest beats in London - how about try something a bit different? I wanted to take a bunch of motorik, minimal tracks and fuse them together into a steady pulse of polyrhythms and then add more layers. Almost treating sections of songs like samples, building layers over each other to create a bigger picture rather than two tracks end to end. Some appear for seconds, some repeatedly thread in and out of the mix, it twists and turns and wrong-foots you occasionally, switching the mood. Also within the set is an Easter egg - an exclusive, newly recorded nest of tracks by Humanoid (aka Brian Dougans) who, when Solid Steel started out, was simultaneously launching his own career with the success of his acid classic, 'Stakker Humanoid', in the British pop charts 30 years ago. Originally a fan of Solid Steel radio himself and later forming the Future Sound of London with Gary Cobain, their incredible radio mixes would in turn be a huge inspiration to me in the 90s. After 25 years as part of the Solid Steel team and after hundreds of hours of mixes, it's great to still be inspired to push myself even further than before with this mix and be among such esteemed company as the show morphs once again into a new era.' In Hour 1 as part of our 30th anniversary week, we welcome Kevin Martin aka The Bug, who first appeared on Solid Steel in 1998 as part of ICE and you can hear this archive mix at SolidSteel.net . He told us; "Having been a dub nerd for so many years, my opinion of post ’Sleng Teng’ cyber-reggae was foolishly blinkered in the mid 90’s, but when i heard the ‘Streetsweeper Riddim’ by Steely & Clevie = game over… My opinion of Bashment/Ragga/Dancehall was immediately reversed upon contact with that one sick riddim series, as Burro Banton fiercely chanted “Boom Wha Dis” mercilessly, or Capleton caught fire on ‘Final Assassin’.. At that time, as a resident of North West London, resistance was futile, and i was fully hooked on trips to Dub Vendor or various hole in the wall black wax emporiums in the Harlesden area, as i became uncontrollably addicted to buying waves of 7” riddims that were dropping relentlessly from Jamaica. This mix is my tip of the hat to the incredible producers that emerged from Ja’s Dancehall scene…Ppl like Dave Kelly, Steely & Clevie, Lenky etc were sonic futurists to me, and their alien arrangements indelibly marked my ears and my own style of production, and still to this day…Their bionic bogle fuel, some of which is included here, sounds as fresh to me now as it did upon release…. But also, it’s been my aim for years, since naming myself The Bug and devoting myself to sound system culture, to try and develop my own mutant dancehall vocabulary. A quest, that begun with my Razor X label and album ‘Pressure’, via my ACID RAGGA releases, and still shows no sign of halting, as i chase the holy grail of constructing a new style of raggamuffin Sci-Fi. Ive included prototypes and demos of what will form future Bug releases here, as a sketchbook for listeners and myself, and a clear sign of intent, and to show how much i still worship Jamaica’s incredible musical innovations. I wanted this tribute to Jamaica’s electronic legacy, to reflect a past, present and future of bashment mutations. And right now, with so many great producers like Equiknoxx, Epic B, Stereotyp, Mr. Mitch, Low Jack, Errorsmith, Still etc etc all fighting the fight for future shock dancehall, it seemed the right time to put together a mix like this one…And as i used to regularly tune into Coldcut’s tripped out SOLID STEEL radio transmissions many many moons ago, its a pleasure to deliver my first mix for Solid Steel since the mixes me and JK Flesh delivered as ICE in the late nineties. Solid Steel has always encouraged freedom of movement and surprises in their choices, and i wanted to ensure i did something special to celebrate the diversity of the show down the years" Hour 1 - THE BUG Dave Kelly - 85 Riddim Shams - Grass Cyaat Riddim The Bug - Tears of a Droid - unreleased The Bug - Daggering riddim - unrlsd The Bug - Untitled 1 - unrlsd The Bug - Rollercoaster Riddim Goldfinga - Stress Stereotyp - Radiation riddim - unrlsd Bobby Digital/John John - Mad Dog Riddim Sly Dunbar/Christopher Birch - Corners boy riddim The Bug - Untitled 2 - unrlsd Colin, Bulby & Fatta - Clothes Pin Riddim Dave Kelly - Mad Up Riddim Equiknoxx - Fly Away Dub The Bug - Untitled 3’ - unrlsd Tony ‘CD” Kelly - Unda Wata Riddim The Bug - Trash It riddim Mr. Mitch - Not Modular - unrlsd The Bug - Freak Freak The Bug - Untitled 4 - unrlsd The Bug - Demon riddim - unrlsd The Bug - Aktion Riddim The Bug - Untitled 5 - unrlsd Ricardo "Bibi" Gardner - Atomic Bomb Riddim Unknown - Surgery Riddim The Bug - Untitled 6 - unrlsd Slam_Productions - Jigga Steely & Clevie - Skettel Riddim Steely & Clevie - Dirty_money riddim Epic B - How Riddim - unrlsd The Bug - Sugar riddim The Bug - Untitled 7 - unreleased Equiknoxx - Flagged Up (Mark Ernestus Remix) The Bug - Invader Riddim - unrlsd David Eccleston - Ride Pon Riddim Version The Bug - 1 Dog Shot Riddim The Bug - Big Riddim The Bug - Politicians Riddim The Bug - Untitled 8 - unrlsd The Bug - Replicant Sex - unrlsd

  • Solid Steel Radio Show 04/12/2018 Hour 2 - Burnt Friedman
    Ninja Tune
    58:12
    4,542

In Hour 2 we hand over to Burnt Friedman who has previously appeared twice on Solid Steel, both in 2001. He is one of Germany’s most long established and highly rated electronic music producer and musician with a career spanning almost 40 years. He was born in Coburg, Germany in 1965 and has lived in Berlin since 2009. After initially being a student of art in Kassel, Germany, Burnt started to focus on music exclusively from the late 1980s onwards. He went on to attend the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne as a postgraduate student and began to publish his musical works along with his studio productions in 1979. He also began performing live around the same time, both of which soon attracted the attention of the Cologne electronic music scene. From there he progressed to various notable music collaborations throughout the 1990s on projects with the likes of Jaki Liebezeit, Atom™ (as Flanger), David Sylvian (as Nine Horses) and since 2017, Mohammad Reza Mortazavi. In 2000 Friedman launched his own record label, Nonplace, with 46 releases to date. His studio and on-stage partnership with Jaki Liebezeit, the former drummer of CAN, lasted 17 years; the two musicians have developed pioneering electronic-acoustic music over that period. On the strength of their craft and universal musical vocabulary they have consciously distanced themselves from the traditional formulas of Western European and Anglo-American music. He told us; "You don´t know where you are. Right. The mix combines tracks from vinyl records purchased in 2018. Independent music is not related to culture,.... nor "club culture". To which degree the pieces manage to stand beside time and place shall be subject to your critical ear." The Solid Steel website http://solidsteel.net/ for track lists and archive shows.
