This dusty, broken-down 4/4 sound is the perfect antidote to soulless EDM music – and despite its detractors, it’s not going anywhere. It’s sometimes said that all musical movements are a reaction against what came before, and that could be true of lo-fi house. Since a few years, artists started popping up on YouTube – artists with ironic, deliberately unserious names like DJ Seinfeld with a broken-down aesthetic that thumbed its nose at glossy, big-room sounds. Characterised by muffled drums, fuzzy synths and a gauzy, saturated quality that suggested a fourth-generation cassette copy, lo-fi house won’t please the audiophiles – and for some, its jokey tone and deliberately low ambitions is a turn-off. Yet the genre seems to have carved out a signature sound, both rugged and strangely melancholic – and it’s equally deniable that the best tracks of the genre are blessed with a dusty beauty that works on or off the dancefloor. 1. YouTube link (cé toé qui paye!) : https://youtu.be/9fkUvBe_OFE As early as 1991, hardcore music in raves morphed into jungle. Jungle then shifted to being called drum & bass and the rest is history. One thing that's interesting - but a lot of music that came before hardcore/jungle was actually better produced (and much of hardcore's more musical elements came from there). I think because it was mostly made in proper studios with engineers. Then by the time hardcore was around you still had some music engineered by professionals. For about five years, between 1992 and 1997, jungle sounded like the future rushing in. During that period, jungle was involved in a process of ceaseless reinvention, dismantling and reassembling itself – and assumptions about sound – before our amazed ears. It began as a mutation of rave, configured from elements of techno, dancehall, dub, rave, house, hip-hop and electro, but the volatile composite made for a sound that was completely unprecedented: futuristic and experimental, yet designed for the dancefloor. I've selected 18 of my favorites and mixed them. 1) Glimpses of Death (Sampled on Origin unknown) 2) Origin Unknown - Valley of the shadows (Long dark mix -1993) 3) Nebula II - Seance (1991) 4) Blame - Music Takes You (2 Bad Mice Remix-1992) 5) Nebula II ‎– Atheama remix 2 (1991) 6) LTJ Bukem - Demon's theme (1992) 7) LTJ Bukem - Enchanted (1993) 8 ) Justice - Soothe my soul (Blame's mix-1994) 9) The House Crew - Euphoria (Ninos Dream Remix-1993) 10) Goldie - Kemistry (1992) 11) LTJ Bukem - Music (1993) 12) Chameleon - Links (1995) 13) Doc Scott - Far away / (Fourteen Flavours Of Funk) (1995) 14) Blame - Neptune (1995) 15) Wax Doctor - Atmospheric funk (1995) 16) Omni Trio - Renegade snares (Foul play remix-1993) 17) Alex Reese - Basic Principles (Wax Doctor (Rollout-1995) 18) The Shamen - Transamazonia (LTJ Bukem Remix-1995)

    G. Hanson aka Convextion has reflections of Basic Channel/Chain Reaction sound and his main inspirations are Juan Atkins and Derrick May. His music also has influences from Stefan Robbers, Red Planet and Carl Craig. He found a way where everything came together: Deepness, Minimalism and Soul, the Detroit-Berlin connection. He released his first 12" on Matrix in 1995. From 1995-1997, he released five ep’s, and then only two more in the next six years until 2005. After that he stopped releasing music and produced only for his personal usage. After a couple of years the label Down Low convinced him to pick up his producing again. He is very careful about sharing his music with the rest of the world. In the last decade he only used the aliases Convextion and E.R.P. (Event Related Potential). E.R.P is an electro-edged moniker. So much music nowadays is categorized as Dub but has nothing to do with it. If there is one band that has sampled and thrived bringing back dub and its influence it sure is The Orb. A few years ago they collab with the legendary Lee Scratch Perry and they sampled massive amounts of dubs on their first two albums. Perpetual dawn has a fantastic bassline from Jah Wobble of PIL fame, Not to mention a plethora of dubby mixes, a lot featured on this mix below. Orb member Kris Weston integrated his technical and creative expertise with Alex Paterson’s Eno-influenced ambience on U.F.Orb, creating “drum and bass rhythms” with “velvet keyboards” and “rippling synth lines”. U.F.Orb reached number one on the UK Albums Chart to the shock of critics, who were surprised that fans had embraced what journalists considered to be progressive rock. Heavily influenced by The Orb and U.F.Orb in particular, many trip hop groups sprang up emulating The Orb’s “chill-out blueprint”. U.F.Orb expresses The Orb’s fascination with alien life with its bizarre sound samples and in the album’s title itself. The album’s single, “Blue Room”, is itself a reference to the supposed Blue Room of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, which was investigated as a possible UFO evidence-holding room. “Blue Room”, a near 17-minute piece, features bass playing by Jah Wobble and guitar by coproducer Steve Hillage. The full version of the song is 40 minutes and was released as a single. The initial UK vinyl release featured a limited edition which came in a sealed blue heavy PVC cover and featured two art prints and a bonus 12-inch of the soundtrack to the film The Orb’s Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld: Patterns and Textures. 1.0 A huge evergrowing pulsating brain named DoubleRR 2.0 The Orb & William S Burroughs - Towers Of Dub (Open Fire) 3.0 revolutionaries-bamba-in-dub (Sampled on Towers of dub) 4.0 The Orb vs. Meat Beat Manifesto - 1855 BC 5.0 The Upsetters - Blackboard Jungle Dub - Blackboard Jungle Dub ( Ver. 1 ) 6.0 Pop Will Eat Itself - Home (Orb Sweet Sin And Salvation Mix) 7.0 Sex Pistols The Fucking Rotter / Big Tits Across America (Sampled on Back side of the Moon) 8.0 Backside of the Moon (Underwater Deep Space) 9.0 Material - Mantra (Praying Mantra Mix Edit) 10.0 Golden Clouds (Youth Gigantic Dreadnaught Dub Mix) 11.0 A Conversation with Rickie Lee Jones edit 12.0 The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds (Cumulonimbus Mix) 13.0 Perpetual Dawn & Perpetual Dawn (Ultrabass 2) 14.0 The Orb feat. Born in Grandbay on the Caribbean Island of Dominica but a true dub vocalist, Tikiman burst onto the scene during the mid-1990s The understated disco dub of “Never Tell You” was the earliest I can recall hearing of him, a debut 10-inch release on Basic Channel’s Burial Mix subsidiary. Following plenty of other work for Rhythm & Sound, issued via various “Rounds,” Tikiman cropped up as a leading light of My Sound, the debut album by Stereotyp, with Tiki on particularly fine ragamuffin form on the opening title track. The False Tuned imprint was launched around the same time, with first issue “Dub It Witaattitude” pointing away from the techno dominance of the past, and grounding more solidly with the roots reggae that directly inspired him – a fantastic debut with very high production values and a pleasurable organic sensibility. But just in case we thought we knew where the label was headed, the lovestruck collaboration with Rene Lowe titled “Faith” was swathed in the same fog of swirling sub-dub techno beats that marked out his early work. Ten years ago, Tikiman told journalist Karsten Frehe that “My philosophy is not to stick on one style, but to be open to all good music.” What the future holds for Paul St Hilaire’s music is thus anyone’s guess, but the off-kilter reggae and hypnotic techno that has made up his oeuvre so far ensures the next release is definitely worth seeking out and investigating. 1) Dialogue - Bongo Shep 2) Rhythm & Sound w/ Tikiman - Ruff Way 3) Molekule - Rhauder feat.
