January 12th, 2020, a Sunday night in Toronto - Matthew Tavares and Leland Whitty (of BADBADNOTGOOD fame) are reunited at Burdock for a live improvised Jazz session. The pair are joined on stage by bassist Julian Anderson - Bowes and drummer Matt Chalmers as part of Burdock’s Piano Fest, an annual event at the city's brewery and music hall. Two days later an email from Matthew hits Mr Bongo's inbox... "I think it turned out amazing, brought some really nice recording gear and it sounds almost like a studio record, thought I'd share. Moments definitely get to the jazzier side but there is some spiritual moments that are so far out". The Bongo office were all blown away by this free-flowing session, one which sounded like a well-rehearsed set at the end of a long tour, rather than a one-take improvised assembly. The chemistry between the musicians is magical. The tight friendship and musical connection between Tavares and Whitty are self - evident, however, Chalmers and Anderson - Bowes have a great contribution to make too. They act as the solid foundation that leaves Tavares and Whitty free to roam and explore moments of darkness and light, intensity and beauty. From the first time of hearing this intimate session, we knew this had to be shared. The same quartet feature on Matthew Tavares & Leland Whitty's 2020 album 'Visions'. The plan to promote 'Visions' was to tour, with each night comprising a uniquely improvised set. Sadly due to world events, this couldn't happen, but for now 'January 12th' is a snapshot of the wizardry that would have been from four amazing musicians at the top of their game.
Hi Everybody, we're almost at the last edition "My Favorite Things" show of this very strange year. Show #29 has a very particular flavor cause I’m very happy to receive my favorite Parisian DJ : Emanuela De Luca. To welcome this very special guest, I started the show with a very special track from 1957 by a legendary french singer on a lovely jazz melody. As usual I have selected some of my last favorite diggings like the great cover of the huge spiritual jazz theme "The Creator Has a Master Plan" by Dezron Douglas & Brandee Younger, a track from the last fusion album from Byron the Aquarius, the brand new Jimi Tenor and Kokoroko and the fabulous Sun Palace’s Edit from Moodymann on BBE. To complete my personal part, here are two lovely soul nuggets : Arthur "So close to you" with its folk attitude and the 1st reissue of the Brand New Kev Beadle Label by Dianne Mower "The Secret Sign". The Emanuela’s mix starts with some Soul Jazz Gliding including a very actual track called « I'll sing from my window » from O'Donel Levy … if you follow what I mean !!! Her mix carries on with some great deep and mellow tunes by Eiji Nakayama, Noe's Jazz Ensemble, Tom Scott & the L.A. Express, Catalyst and the italian Sestetto Dino Piana & Oscar Valdambrini. Gradually the selection goes into some wicked fusion Jazz Dancefloor including Ryo Kawasaki (RIP), Boy Katindig and the anthem "Sombre Guitar" by Danser's Inferno. Enjoy !!! DJ Psycut : 01 - Léo Ferré - Le serpent qui danse (1957) 02 - Dezron Douglas, Brandee Younger - The Creator Has a Master Plan (2020) 03 - Byron the Aquarius - Timeless (Alternative Dub Mix) (2020) 04 - Arthur - So close to you (1981) 05 - Dianne Mower - The Secret Sign (1980) 06 - Jimi Tenor - Sugar And Spice (2020) 07 - KOKOROKO - Baba Ayoola (2020) 08 - SunPalace - Rude Movements (Moodymann Edit) Emanuela De Luca : 09 - O'Donel Levy - I'll sing from my window (1976) 10 - Eiji Nakayama - Faraway Road (1978) 11 - Noe's Jazz Ensemble - Devils and Angels (1981) 12 - Tom Scott & the L.A. There's no doubt that 2020 is a very different year for everyone. But for that very reason I didn't want to let a pandemic get in the way of the annual Christmas song. I thought it was quite fitting to choose Christmas Star, originally from the Home Alone 2 score (get it - we're all home alone), but knew that getting guests into the studio would be a challenge. Instead, I reached out to the Sounds of Superior Chorus, who mobilized many of their members within days and soon the cellphone/iPad/laptop recordings of their individual parts started coming in. We knew this was the safest way to do the project. From the beginning I knew I wanted a women's choir, but for fun I invited Rod and Larry from the Gentlemen of Harmony to join in, as well as my sister Megan, who is a former member of the Sounds of Superior. One other factoid is that every song always has a musical quote within it, so I'm grateful to have had Darlene Chepil-Reid join in to reference Vince Guaraldi Trio's "Christmas Time Is Here" We hope you enjoy our reimagining of "Christmas Star", and have a safe and happy holiday season, from your friends at the Sounds of Superior Chorus and I! ------------ CREDITS ------------ Originally written by John Williams with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse. MIMS is delighted to premiere “Come Inside”, the second single lifted from Italian pianist, composer and producer, Nicola Guida’s forthcoming ‘Speleology’ album, due for release early next year on Inner Circle Music, the prestigious US label headed by sax legend Greg Osby. “Come Inside” is a laid back exploration of jazz and hip hop, featuring Karnival Kid on MC duties. His nonchalant yet powerful delivery recalls Loyle Carner, and flows beautifully over Guida’s delicate playing, melting the notes of his piano into a seamless harmonic stream. Soothing flutes provide the melodic line throughout, with additional production adding layers of sonic richness. A disciplined virtuoso and a freethinking, genre-bending pianist, Nicola Guida is a London-based Italian jazz pianist, composer and producer. Academician at heart - he's the author of two respected thesis on jazz and holds a Masters in Philosophy. On “Come Inside”, Nicola tells us "I'm so delighted to release this tune which contains a sample of one of my heroes, legendary Italian composer Piero Piccioni". “Come Inside” will be released on November 27 on all digital platforms.
MIMS is delighted to premiere "The Underdog" by Nick Walters & The Paradox Ensemble. Bursting with energy, this big band number is the first track on their forthcoming third studio album 'Implicate Order', the inaugural release on Nick Walters brand new label, D.O.T. Records. The eleven piece group continues to break the mould of big band jazz, combining spiritual and eastern jazz moods with West African rhythms and a fusion of electronics. “Implicate Order” follows up the bands highly acclaimed “Awakening” LP released on 22a in January 2019. Safe to say, it does not disappoint, but rather builds on the previous releases. Walters shines on trumpet and electronics, his rousing compositions provide the perfect foil for this band that appears to be very comfortable playing with each other. Jim Molyneux is impressive on drumkit, as is Rebecca Nash on piano and of course, Ed 'Tenderlonious' Cawthorne on tenor sax, flute and piccolo. "The Underdog" is a sprightly tribute to Charles Mingus, inspired by his classic album 'The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady’. Walters’ lofty trumpet takes the lead, conducting the 11 piece band along a catchy hook, brought to a head by the excellent Richard Foote on Trombone. We anticipate with much excitement the post-lockdown album and label launch at the London's Jazz Cafe, January 26. Pre-order for the album goes live on Friday 4th December: https://dotrecords.bandcamp.com/ Line Up Nick Walters: trumpet, electronics, compositions Rebecca Nash: piano Sam Healey: alto sax Ed Cawthorne: tenor sax, flute, piccolo Richard Foote: trombone Ben Kelly: sousaphone Anton Hunter: guitar Aidan Shepherd: accordion Paul Michael: bass guitar Kodjovi Kush: percussion Jim Molyneux: drums
